Dear Nikki,

We have had some changes in the past few months. Originally, Ashland Economic Development was a Department of the City of Ashland. We have transitioned into a new organization, Ashland Area Council for Economic Development, a regional council of government, which was formed in December of 2005. It will be supported by the City of Ashland, Ashland County, the Mohican Area Growth Foundation (MAGF) and private donors. The Ashland Area Council for Economic Development has the City of Ashland and Ashland County as permanent members of the board. The City and County also designated MAGF as a partner with board representation. The Board members for 2006 are Chairman Glen Stewart, Vice-Chairman Mike Welch, Recording Secretary Mike Kelly, Board member Jim Gribble and Board member John Hovsepian. The organization is still located on the first floor of the Municipal Building. Another big change is that Martin Irvine resigned at the end of January to move closer to his family. We understand Martin's decision and will miss his experience. Evan Scurti has since been named Interim Director. Congratulations Evan!

“One Region. One Future.”: Voices and Choices Regional Planning Process Enters the “community conversation” phase

The Fund for Our Economic Future, a $30+ million dollar pool of money and organization in Northeast Ohio directed toward grant-making, economic education, and regional planning, continues to educate Northeast Ohio citizens on the importance of a unified regional voice and agenda. The 15 counties of Northeast Ohio are home to more than 4 million people, making the region larger in population than 23 states. This regional economy is greater than many small countries and employs one-third of all workers in the state of Ohio. However, we have all witnessed the erosion of major sectors of this region’s economic base. Therefore, an important activity of “The Fund” is to make targeted investments in organizations that have the ability to transform our regional economy. You can review the Fund’s investments in these non- profit, growth-oriented institutions at www.futurefundn eo.org

The Fund recognizes that a regional economy cannot be transformed in a top-down fashion. Therefore, it has invested in an 18-month regional planning process called, “Voices and Choices”. Through town hall meetings, one-on-one interviews, website interaction, and the current “community conversation” phase, a true grassroots economic agenda is developing in Northeast Ohio. Community conversations will be held throughout the region from February—May. These meetings can consist of as few as 6 participants to as many as 200 and will cover one or a combination of the following topics: Economic Growth and Employment, Education & Skills, Equity & Fairness, Quality of Life & Place, and Cooperation & Governance. Please contact the Ashland Area Council for Economic Development or visit the Voices and Choices website (www.voiceschoices.org) to learn how to participate or host a conversation. The Ashland Area Chamber of Commerce has decided to host a conversation at their first Community Matters Breakfast of the year (these breakfasts are designed to showcase the business community and educate citizens on the economic issues in our county). The breakfast will be held at The Mill Restaurant inside Buehler’s on March 16th, 7:30am- 9:00am, and will cover all 5 topics listed above. Please contact Jen at the Chamber (419-281-4584) to learn more about this great opportunity to discuss our regional economy.

Moving to City’s Garber-Ford Industrial Area

Co-owners Mitch Johnson and Mike Hunt recently closed on a deal that will provide them with 5 acres, including a building, bought from the City of Ashland. The City worked in partnership with AACED to facilitate this deal. We are pleased to complete the sale, as this is a great opportunity for J&H. Congratulations to Mitch, Mike, and their staff, which includes sons Cody and Ryan Hunt and Danny Johnson. Danny will serve as a supervisor with the company, while completing his studies at ATI in Wooster. Their soon-to-be landscaped grounds and improved building will be a great addition to the city’s Northwest side.
Economic development news from Southern Ashland County.

The Mohican Area Growth Foundation (MAGF) has officially transitioned into its role as a Division of AACED. With MAGF Board President Jim Gribble serving on the AACED Board, and AACED Interim Director Evan Scurti managing MAGF’s economic development strategy, the county is poised for continued cooperation and balanced growth. In addition to aggressive marketing of the Loudonville Industrial Park and the former Merillat building, MAGF is currently partnering with the Loudonville-Mohican Chamber of Commerce and Convention & Visitors’ Bureau and many other tourism-related groups on a 5- Year Tourism and Recreation Plan. The overall goal of these partners is to create a “Mohican Recreation District” that is able to market year-round activities for citizens, visitors, and outdoor enthusiasts from around the country.

Mohican Area leaders are exhibiting great leadership by incorporating these goals into the area’s overall economic development strategy. There is great potential for tourism growth, green space preservation, and job creation, all in balance with the existing strength of agriculture and industry. AACED looks forward to playing a facilitative role as local leaders embark on this journey. Many projects are underway, including:

The Bike path Project, the pathway project is being built on a volunteer basis with the help of many village workers, and business owners. The Mohican Area Growth Foundation has played a leading role in getting this project running. The completion of the bike path project is set for May of 2006. The project will also include a bridge across the Mohican River joining the path to the downtown area. There are also many new events and activities being planned to bring year round tourism and recreation into Mohican. The newest event added to this year’s agenda will be in October of 2006 the Mohican Lumberjack Show. This show will not only be entertaining, but educational also.

TARGET (“To Aim and Realize Global Expansion Together”) is a multi-session seminar for North Central Ohio companies hoping to begin exporting or grow their international sales. The program utilizes an effective combination of instruction on exporting topics such as trade agreements, international finance, and logistics networks, while allowing time for attendees to network with similar companies as well as experienced exporters. Several Ashland County companies and Interim Director Evan Scurti have registered for this 6-session program beginning on March 23rd. This first session will include an “Exporters Roundtable” and details about the services of the U.S. Department of Commerce.

This is a FREE program and an excellent opportunity for companies to work together as a region to explore international markets. The sessions will be one half- day per month, running from March-August. In addition to instruction on the “nuts and bolts” of exporting, future sessions will explain how to find additional export markets. All sessions will take place at OSU-Mansfield’s campus from 10:30-2:00. Future dates are: April 27th, May 25th, June 22nd, July 27th, and August 24th. AACED is co- sponsoring the series with Braintree, The Institute for Human Investment and Economic Growth, OSU’s Fisher College of Business, Richland Economic Development, City of Mansfield Economic Development, CIBER—Center for International Business Education and Research.

For more information, and to register, please contact Braintree (Mansfield area business incubator) Director Bob Cohen at 419-525-1614 or bcohen@braintreepartners.org
The Ohio Department of Development’s International Trade Division is currently accepting nominations for the 2006 Governor’s Excellence in Exporting Awards (“E” Awards).

Each year, “E” Awards are given to companies and organizations of all sizes that have shown a strong commitment to increasing exports of Ohio goods or a heightened awareness of exporting as a vital component of the state’s economy. Since 1991, more than 300 companies have received the award. In addition, the Governor annually presents the “Exporter of the Year” award to one Ohio company that exemplifies the state’s commitment to international trade. American Augers, Inc., located in West Salem, received the 2005 Exporter of the Year Award.

A selection committee will review all completed applications. Nominees should outline how they have: demonstrated aggressive international marketing of products, including research activities; developed a network of distributors, international offices or subsidiaries; developed and marketed a new export product; achieved a breakthrough in a closed market; overcome unique exporting obstacles; and/or developed a training program for employees involved in exporting.

“E” Award applications can be accessed via the Internet at www.odod.state.oh.us/itd or can be obtained by calling the Ohio Department of Development’s International Trade Division at (800) 848-1300, ext. 6-5017 or (614) 466-5017.

The application deadline is March 31, 2006. Governor Bob Taft will host a Statehouse luncheon to announce the 2006 “E” Award winners on June 21, 2006.
